Software requirements

MIMEsweeper for SMTP's software requirements depend on the options chosen from the Installation Wizard. The system scenarios are listed in table below.
i. For the typical installation of a primary server, all the requirements in the table below apply. The audit database is optional.
ii. For the typical installation of an additional server, all the requirements in the table below apply except the web server (Internet Information Services). The audit database is optional.
iii.  For any custom installation, the requirements depend on the chosen MIMEsweeper features. Use the "Custom install option" column in the table below to determine the requirements.
iv.  For installation of client tools only, only the items marked "All options" in the "Custom install option" column in the table below are required.

The Comments column of the table below indicates which requirements the Installation Wizard will install.

Policy Server Anti-virus tools (for anti-virus scanning) Choose from the supported anti-virus tools
Policy Server SMTP alerters (optional) Microsoft CDO for Windows Version 2.0 If you require SMTP alerters you must install Microsoft CDO separately. It is included in the supported Microsoft Windows operating systems.
Policy Server SNMP alerters (optional) Microsoft Windows SNMP service If you require SNMP alerters you must install the SNMP service separately. It is included in the supported Microsoft Windows operating systems.
Web Applications Web server Internet Information Services (IIS), including ASP.NET support. You are recommended to include Microsoft's latest IIS security patches. You must ensure that IIS is installed with ASP.NET support.     For more information on installing IIS with ASP.NET support, see the Installation chapter of the MIMEsweeper for SMTP 5.4 Getting Started Guide.

Note that we recommend you do not install the Web Applications on a domain controller.     This is because the local ASPNET user account is not created when installing the .NET Framework on a domain controller.    Microsoft has issued Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 315158 relating to this problem.    You can find the article at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315158.

On Windows 2008, you also need the following IIS Role Services:

  • Application Development | ASP.NET
  •
  • Security | Windows Authentication
  •
  • Management Tools | IIS 6 Management Compatibility | IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility
Any Server Tracking database software Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 To get the best results from message tracking, consider using a dedicated database server running SQL Server     software for message tracking. Due to the volume of data that message tracking generates, SQL Server 2005 Express is not recommended.
Any machine requiring to access the Web Applications Web browser Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 7.0 or later Internet Explorer is included in the supported Microsoft Windows operating systems.
